Mississippi River’s Contribution to Ocean Pollution<\/h2>\n

The Mississippi River winds its way through the heart of the United States, then plunges down the Gulf of Mexico. While the designation of the Mississippi River has brought many benefits to the United States, this river is also one of the most significant sources of pollution to the ocean worldwide.<\/p>\n

The Mississippi River is the largest watershed on the continent, discharging over 8 times more water than any other river in the world. It is a major tributary of the Gulf of Mexico, and this is where a significant amount of its pollution arrives. A study conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2014 found that over half of the pollutants discharged into the ocean in the US comes from the Mississippi River.<\/p>\n

The primary source of pollution that enters the ocean via the Mississippi River comes from agriculture and urban runoff. Agriculture is the leading source of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment that are discharged into the water. These nutrients can cause eutrophication, a process that reduces oxygen in the water and makes it difficult for aquatic life to survive. Pollutants from urban runoff can include urban wastewater, toxic chemicals, and heavy metals. These pollutants can cause water to become acidified, and can have a direct impact on the health of marine life.<\/p>\n

The pollutants from the Mississippi River also cause a change in the pH balance and reduce the amount of sunlight that can penetrate into the water. This can cause algal blooms and estuaries to experience a decrease in biodiversity, which can be devastating to the entire ecosystem.<\/p>\n
