It would be unsurprising to learn that the Mississippi River floods quite regularly. The frequency of this natural event has increased dramatically in recent years due to the growing impacts of climate change.

The Mississippi River is the most iconic river in the United States and has been the site of many famous floods in the country’s history. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the costliest and one of the deadliest natural disasters in US history, causing over $300 million in damages.

Today, the river floods regularly in areas throughout the Mississippi River basin which includes parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. The US Geological Survey said the river floods “typically three to four times each year from December to April because of intense winter weather.”

The danger posed by these floods is serious. For example, in 2019, the Midwest was devastated by historic levels of flooding due to two consecutive periods of heavy rainfall and snowmelt along the river. Homes and businesses were flooded as the Mississippi River reached its highest levels since 1937.
