In the United States, the Mississippi River flows through 10 different states. It is the fourth-longest river in the world and one of North America’s most important rivers. It is a significant transportation and industrial corridor and it is also a source of hydroelectric power.

Hydroelectric power is a renewable source of energy that utilizes the kinetic energy in the flow of water that is converted into electrical energy. On the Mississippi River, there are many hydroelectric power plants, but exactly how many are there?

The answer to this question depends on what you consider to be a hydroelectric power plant or dam. According to experts in the field, there are over 160 dams on the Mississippi River, at least 43 of which are equipped with hydroelectric generating stations. Of those 43, most are owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Additionally, many other dams along the river contain small hydroelectric plants. There are also several pumped storage hydroelectric plants located on the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River hydroelectric dams are important sources of energy for the region. Between them, they provide about 1.4 GW of electricity, enough to meet the needs of over one million people in the 10 states through which the river runs. In terms of capacity, the hydroelectric plants represent about 8% of the total electric capacity of the United States. The majority of the electricity generated by the plants is used to power factories and other industrial activities, while a small portion is used directly by consumers.
