Recently, reports of a baby floating down the Mississippi river filled online newspapers, television news outlets and even talk radio shows. In a desperate attempt to find the infant, dozens of volunteers showed up to search along the riverbank. But hours turned into days and days turned into weeks and still, the baby wasn’t found. So, did they find the baby in the Mississippi river?

In spite of the unknown fate of the Mississippi baby, the search inspired an overwhelming amount of volunteers who showed up to help. One volunteer, Green Snark, says, “When I heard about the baby on the news, I couldn’t just sit at home and do nothing”. Volunteers received instructions from the Coast Guard, who oversaw the search and rescue operation. Unfortunately, the crew wasn’t able to locate the infant but their efforts to save the baby exploded on social media.

Further along in the search, the Coast Guard called off the active search but the story only intensified as news of the infant spread worldwide. The involvement of volunteers from all over the Tri-state area providing veteran search and rescue personnel with on-site assistance sparked a sense of teamwork and unity. With their help, the Coast Guard and volunteer search created more urgency to resolve the mystery of the Mississippi Baby. Was the baby right under their noses and they’re not looking in the right places?

Questions began to arise as to what happened to the baby. Unfortunately, there are very few clues to go on. According to the Coast Guard, no one saw the baby or from where it was dropped off into the river. Local law and government agencies along with citizens were calling for investigations into matters such as possible negligence, abuse, or even abduction. Strangely enough, the Mississippi area had observed a similar case of a baby being placed in the river the month before.
