The Mississippi River is a major river system in North America, flowing for a total of 2,320 miles from its source in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Along these 2,320 miles are vast wetlands, swamps, and deltas. It is home to diverse species of birds, fish, and other organisms.<\/p>\n

Studies have found that the average depth of the Mississippi River is 22.7 feet, which is considered to be rather shallow for a river of its size. The maximum recorded depth is however 191 feet in Lake Itasca, at the headwaters of the river. About 25% of the total 2,320 miles is considered less than 6 feet in depth, so in many places the river is not even deep enough to float a boat. The shallowest section is located near the Gulf of Mexico, where the river is only 3.5 feet deep.<\/p>\n
