The Mississippi River, the major river of the second-largest drainage system on the North American continent, is at risk of drying up in 2022. The river supplies water to cities, farms and wetlands, and provides vital habitat for many species. As a result of a changing climate and increasing development, the businesses and people that rely upon the river face a potential crisis.

Climate change in the form of higher temperatures and longer droughts have made the Mississippi River susceptible to drying up before 2022. In 2017, the Keeling Curve, a record of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels over the past century, reached its highest level yet. Warmer temperatures and reduced water availability are driving a range of repercussions, from water shortages to crops in distress. To make matters worse, average precipitation across the Mississippi River basin has fallen by almost 17% in the last decade.

Engineers and scientists have raised the alarm about the Mississippi River drying up, warning that the river may become too shallow to transport water or cargo. The US Army Corps of Engineers, which operates and maintains the Mississippi River System, estimates that if the current rate of water usage along the river continues, the Mississippi River may not have enough water to sustain itself by 2022.

To prevent a crisis, the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Mississippi River Commission has explored solutions like practices to reduce water loss, such as better surface water management and increased reservoir capacity. However, these solutions will require significant financial investments.
