Though the Mississippi River Delta has been standing tall as a dynamic and energetic ecosystem throughout history, changes are now slowly engulfing this network of sparkling marshes. In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the current state of the Mississippi River Delta, examining the background information, causes and impacts of the changes occurring there.

The first European settlers in the region arrived in the early 18th century. For many years, the Delta hosted special kinds of landforms, such as river channels, bayous, marshes, swamps and large nutria meadows. These landforms were so intertwined and interconnected that this coastal zone was also known as a ‘multi-layered landscape’.

In the 1950s, sea level rise impacted the Mississippi River Delta’s geography, as well as its resources. The Delta experienced its shared water circulation blocked and its capacity to accumulate sediments decreased tremendously. This had a direct impact on the mud flats, wetlands and marshes. The combination of land subsidence, a decrease in sediment supply, and land-use changes had a drastic effect on the Delta’s ecosystem, leading to its acceleration of the coastline to the Gulf of Mexico.

Today, the Mississippi River Delta is facing an accelerated erosion due to its inadequate sediment supply. Moreover, land use changes such as the conversion of marsh land to agricultural land are also a major threat. These threats should not be overlooked as they also lead to coastal degradation, saltwater intrusion, and wetland losses.
