The Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge is a fundamental component of Louisiana’s road network, connecting the east and west sides of the city and greatly contributing to the local economy. At 8,400 feet long, the bridge spans the Mississippi River and connects travelers from Lake Pontchartrain to the downtown area. The bridge is part of the I-10, one of the busiest stretches of interstate in the nation.

Since its construction in 1965, the bridge has been open 24-7, providing drivers with access to both sides of the city. Every year, the bridge handles an estimated 90 million crossings and is a key component of the city’s infrastructure. The bridge is in such high demand, that there is an estimated four million vehicles that cross the bridge each month. Despite this, the bridge has an admirable safety record and is considered one of the most stable pieces of infrastructure in the city.

The bridge itself is still standing strong more than 50 years after it was first built and is currently undergoing a massive upgrade. As part of the upgrade, the bridge’s infrastructure has been strengthened to help reduce traffic congestion, increase reliable access and improve road safety. This includes improvements to the bridge’s signal system and the installation of additional lanes and protections for pedestrians and cyclists. These improvements have made the bridge stronger, more efficient and safer for all users.

Additionally, the bridge is also equipped with an advanced monitoring system. This system provides real-time information about the flow of traffic, as well as its impact on the environment. This has allowed engineers and city officials to take proactive measures to ensure that the bridge is operating in its best condition.
