The Nile River Delta is situated near the Mediterranean Sea and is part of the African continent. The river originates in the Ethiopian Highlands, flowing trough the major Egyptian cities of Cairo and Alexandria, before emptying into the Mediterranean at the Nile Delta. It is reckoned that the Nile became the longest river in the world in 1962,much longer than the Amazon River in South America and the Yellow River in China.

The Nile Delta stretches over two thirds of the country to reach a length of some six hundred kilometers and includes some twenty five million acres of land. It is divided into three sections known as the East Delta, the Middle Delta and the West Delta.

The East Delta is the most densely populated part of the delta, containing the cities of Damietta, Bilbais and Rosetta, as well as the major ports of Damietta and Port Said. The Middle Delta region is generally wetter and contains many irrigated farms, as well as the Suez Canal which links the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea.

The West Delta is much less populated than the East and Middle Delta regions, but it is an important area in terms of production and exportation. From the West Delta, the majority of the country’s grain is shipped out to the world. It is also an important hub for fishing, and many ancient temples and religious festivals take place within the region.
