The Rise and Reign of Ancient Egypt

One of the most remarkable ancient civilizations, Ancient Egypt, is said to have flourished mainly due to the Nile River. The Nile was the one source of life and the key to their territory’s success. So, how did the Nile River help ancient Egypt?

The increased availability of water due to the Nile River enabled the development of agriculture, trade and a class-based society. The people of Egypt were able to create farms, trading outposts and construct a self-sustaining, yet prosperous civilization. According to historians, the civilization was able to continue for centuries due to the reliable water supply provided by the river.

The Nile River was also seen as a passage for new ideas, which were brought to Egypt from surrounding areas. This exchange of ideas allowed for a varied culture and increased religious influences. Ancient Egyptians believed the god, Hapi, was responsible for the arrival of the Nile waters and celebrated this annual rise of the river as a festival.

The Nile’s constructive geographical features were beneficial for many reasons. The river provided connectivity to different parts of Egypt. From the banks of the river, people stepped forward to create canals, ships and improve the Nile River’s transport capabilities. In ancient Egypt, the Nile was seen as a symbol of power, success and Egyptian Pharaohs declared it to be their ultimate source of strength.
