Are there crocodiles in the Nile River in Egypt? Almost certainly. These fascinating creatures have been labeled ‘living fossils’ due to lack of evolution over millions of years, and their presence in Egypt dates back as far as the days of the Pharaohs.

The Nile River is the longest river in Africa, stretching for 4,147 miles, and is a vital life source for over 200 million people in 10 African countries. The majority of the Nile passes through Egypt, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo before flowing into the Mediterranean Sea. It’s a warm, shallow body of water, making it a perfect habitat for animals like crocodiles, hippopotamuses, and several fish varieties including Nile Perch.

Due to its immense size and various tributaries, exploring the entire Nile River is almost impossible. However, according to conservation experts, it is likely that Nile crocodiles live throughout the entire length of the river. There have been reports of sightings in the distant island of Meroe in Sudan, the furthest source of the Nile. It is assumed that they have migrated from central to east African locations.

“In Egypt, they can be found as far north as Luxor and as south as Aswan,” says Shannon Cowan, a wildlife conservation specialist working in Egypt. “Most are bred for traders in the Aswan area and around Lake Nasser.” She explains that these rare animals are typically exported to zoos and private owners around the world for the pet trade.
