Background Information

The Yenisei River, an iconic river on the Asian continent, originates in the Tuva region of Russia and flows across Russia before emptying into the Kara Sea. The Yenisei is the largest river system in the Russian Arctic and is estimated to be 5,539 km in length. It is also the sixth-longest river in the world.

Though the Yenisei has been known to mankind since ancient times, around the 6th century BC, its strategic importance increased during the 15th and 16th centuries when the Cossacks established trade routes northeast of the river.

The source of the Yenisei River is the small Butugychag Mountain in the Sayan Mountains, located in the Tuva swath of the Russian Federation, about 750 kilometers south of the Arctic Ocean.

Data

The Yenisei basin, at 3,345,000 km2, is the largest in Asia and is the third-largest in the world, behind the Amazon river valley and the Lena river valley in Siberia. It spans over five regions of Russia, including the regions of Krasnoyarsk, Kemerovo, Khakassia, Tyva, and Irkutsk.
