Flooding of the Yangtze River is a natural phenomenon that plagues the densely populated Yangtze Valley since ancient times. The Yangtze River is known for its death toll in terms of people killed and property damage, but it is also an integral part of Chinese culture, providing resources and sustenance to hundreds of thousands of people living there. People of the Yangtze Valley have traditionally adapted to flooding by building dikes to make their homes more secure or by relocating during times when the water level is particularly high.
