The Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia and the third-longest river in the world. Spanning 3,900 miles from its source in western China all the way to Shanghai, it plays an essential role in Chinese geography, culture, and society. As the most influential river in China, the Yangtze’s climate has a huge impact on its environment and the people who inhabit its banks.<\/p>\n

The climate of the Yangtze River varies as it makes its long journey. At its source in the glaciers of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, temperatures are cold; the climate is described as being an alpine tundra, similar to that seen in the Arctic. As the river descends, the climate quickly becomes subtropical, with summers being hot and humid and winters being mild. Moving further downstream, the climate becomes temperate, with cold and dry winters and mild summers.<\/p>\n

The Yangtze River’s climate is greatly influenced by its surrounding geography. As the geography changes and the river passes through deserts, terraced hillsides, and cities, so does its climate. The annual average temperature near the river is around 10 degrees Celsius, with highs during summer reaching 30 degrees and lows during winter reaching -7 degrees. These temperatures create monsoon rains which contribute significantly to the region’s atmospheric moisture.<\/p>\n

The Yangtze River’s climate also has an impact on the environment, particularly with regards to the river’s water supply. Since the river is so long, its climate is experienced in many different ecosystems. As the river passes through forested areas and deserts, this can affect the availability of water, which in turn impacts the plants and animals living in the surrounding areas. For example, heavy rains can cause flooding, leading to the displacement of animals and vegetation.<\/p>\n
