The Amazon River is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, and by some definitions it is the longest. The headwaters of the Apurímac River on Nevado Mismi had been considered for nearly a century as the Amazon’s most distant source, until a 2014 study found it to be the headwaters of the Mantaro River on the Cordillera Rumi Cruz in Peru. The Munduruku soon made enemies of the Portuguese, who needed to establish sovereignty and control over the powerful river and the abundant resources in its basin. In the early 1600s, the Portuguese established the first European settlements in the Amazon basin, and by the early 1700s, had built forts up and down the river, controlling the region for nearly two hundred years. Today, major towns in the Amazon River Basin include Iquitos, Leticia, and Manaus.<\/p>\n

The Amazon River flows through many major towns, including Manaus, Tabatinga, Benjamin Constant, Santarém, and Belém.<\/p>\n
