Francisco de Orellana was a Spanish soldier who was the first European explorer of the Amazon River. He was born in the city of Trujillo in the Extremadura region of Spain in 1490. Not much is known about his early life, but he is believed to have served in the Spanish military in Italy during the Italian Wars. He first set foot in South America in 1526, when he accompanied the Spanish explorer Gonzalo Pizarro on an expedition to conquer the Inca Empire in present-day Peru. After the fall of the Inca Empire, Orellana remained in South America and became involved in the struggle for control of the region between the Spanish and the Portuguese.<\/p>\n
