Brazilian Army officer and explorer, Colonel Cândido Rondon, was the first person to swim the entire length of the Amazon River. Rondon, who was already an experienced explorer, set out on his journey in 1907 with a team of fellow soldiers. The group started their expedition at the river’s mouth in Belém, Brazil and ended their journey nearly 6,000 miles later in Iquitos, Peru. Rondon’s journey took him through dense jungle, treacherous rapids, and dangerous wildlife, but he ultimately succeeded in becoming the first person to swim the entire length of the Amazon River.

In 2007, swimmer Martin Strel became the first person to swim the entire length of the Amazon River.

This was a record-breaking distance of 5,268 km (3,273 mi), longer than the width of the Atlantic Ocean. He had escort boats that were prepared to pour blood into the river to distract meat-eating fish such as piranhas.
