The Ganges River in India is home to the Ganges river dolphin, a species that is facing extinction. There are several reasons for this, including hunting, pollution, and entanglement in fishing nets. The Indian government has placed a ban on hunting the dolphin, and is working to clean up the river and create protected areas for the dolphin to live and breed.

There are a few things that are being done to protect the Ganges river dolphin. The first is that they are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972. This act makes it illegal to kill them or to harm them in any way. Secondly, the Indian government has set up a few sanctuaries for them where they will be safe from harm. Lastly, there are a few NGOs that are working to create awareness about the dolphin and their plight.

What is being done to help the Indus River Dolphin?

The Indus river dolphin is an endangered species that is found in the Indus river in Pakistan. WWF and the Sindh Wildlife Department have been working together to rescue dolphins from irrigation canals and to educate fishermen about the importance of protecting the species. To date, they have rescued 80 dolphins and are working to promote ecotourism activities, such as dolphin watching, to help raise awareness and funds for the conservation of the Indus river dolphin.

The National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC) is coming up on the 4,400 square metre plot of land on the premises of Patna University for the conservation of the endangered Gangetic river dolphin. The centre will have a captive breeding programme for the river dolphin and will also be used for research and public awareness programmes.
