The Ganges River is one of the most important rivers in India and is also one of the longest rivers in the world. It starts in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Where does the Ganges lead to?

The Bay of Bengal is a large body of water that forms the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean. It is bounded by India to the west, Bangladesh to the north, Burma to the east, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the south. The bay covers an area of 1,600,000 square miles (4,100,000 square km) and has a maximum depth of 20,000 feet (6,100 m). The Ganges River, which is 1,560 miles (2,510 km) long and drains one-fourth of the territory of India, ends in the Ganges, or Ganges-Brahmaputra, delta and empties into the Bay of Bengal.

The impact of the Ganges descending from heaven would have been catastrophic if not for Lord Shiva catching her in his hair. By doing so, he prevented the earth from being shattered and ensured that the Ganges could flow safely to the Himalayas.
