The Bhagavata Purana depicts another origin of Ganga. In this version, Ganga is the daughter of Himavat and the wife of Shantanu. Shantanu was a king who was very much in love with Ganga. One day, Shantanu went out hunting and saw a beautiful deer. He chased the deer and finally caught it. When he went to kill the deer, he saw that it was actually a beautiful woman. The woman introduced herself as Ganga and said that she was a princess from the heavenly kingdom. Ganga had come to earth to test Shantanu’s character. Shantanu passed the test and Ganga agreed to marry him.<\/p>\n

The Bhagirathi River is one of the two headstreams of the Ganges River. It originates from the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas. When the ice of this glacier melts, it forms the clear waters of the Bhagirathi River. As the Bhagirathi River flows down the Himalayas, it joins the Alaknanda River, officially forming the Ganges River.<\/p>\n
