Diogo Cao was an important Portuguese Explorer who helped lay the foundation for the Portuguese Empire. He made two voyages along the coast of Africa in the 1480s. He explored the Congo River and the coasts of present-day Angola and Namibia.<\/p>\n

Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer who followed in the footsteps of Dias and became the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa and all the way to India. Da Gama sailed from Lisbon, Portugal in July 1497, with four ships. The journey was long and difficult, and two of his ships were lost along the way. But da Gama persevered and finally arrived in India in May 1498. His voyage was a great success and opened up the East to European trade.<\/p>\n
