Xian Xinghai’s Yellow River Cantata is one of the most famous pieces of Chinese music. It was written in 1939 at Yan’an, in a cave, in just six days. The Cantata is in eight movements, and uses traditional folk melodies. It is a very patriotic piece, and the image of the Yellow River is used as a symbol of Chinese defiance against the Japanese invaders.<\/p>\n
