The ranch was home to a variety of animals, including deer, bison, elk, and peacocks. It was a popular destination for school field trips and birthday parties. In 2016, the ranch closed its doors for good. The owners cited declining attendance and increasing costs as the reasons for the closure.<\/p>\n

The Yellow River Game Ranch was a popular tourist destination in Georgia, known for its resident animals. In December of 2018, the ranch closed its doors and the animals were re-homed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Some of the animals, including the bison, pigs, vultures, turtles and bears, were cared for by dedicated volunteers.<\/p>\n

We are still taking reservations to assist in social distancing. Parking is always free. Children 2 and under are free. At this time, walk-ups are welcome.<\/p>\n

The Ordways own and operate the Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary, and one of the activities that visitors can participate in is gem mining. Liam Ordway, the son of Jonathan and Katie, demonstrates the activity in the photo. It’s a great way to learn about and appreciate the natural world, and the Ordways are passionate about providing that opportunity to others.<\/p>\n

There are nearly 20 species of rare and endangered plants and animals that inhabit the park, including flatwood salamanders, frogs, wet prairie sparrows, loggerhead shrikes, red-shouldered hawks, Cooper’s hawks, great blue herons, cottonmouths, Eastern diamond back rattlesnakes and gray foxes.<\/p>\n
