The Yellow River or Huang He is the second-longest river in China, after the Yangtze River, and the sixth-longest river system in the world at the estimated length of 5,464 km (3,395 mi). The Yellow River basin has an east–west extent of about 1,900 kilometers (1,180 mi) and a north–south extent of about 1,100 km (680 mi). Its total basin area is about 742,443 square kilometers (286,659 sq mi), and its annual flow is about 2,829 cubic kilometers (679 cu mi).<\/p>\n

The Yellow River is notorious for its frequent floods, which have caused devastating damage throughout its history. At least one-third of the Yellow River’s length is unnavigable because of the numerous sandbars at its mouth. The river is also noted for its distinctive color, which is caused by large amounts of silt it carries from the Loess Plateau of China’s northwest.<\/p>\n
