Introduction

The Mississippi River is one of the famous rivers in the world, flowing freely across two different countries, the USA and Canada. Spanning a total of 3,734 km in length, the Mississippi River is the fourth longest river system in the world. People are often interested in how deep the river gets, so it is worth delving into this topic to learn more.

Depth Description

The source of the Mississippi River lies in the north of the United States and it flows southward through 10 US states, eventually reaching the Gulf of Mexico. The average depth of the Mississippi River is twelve metres, but depending on the area, it can get deep. In the Lake Itasca region, which is the source of the Mississippi River, the depth of the river is approximately 1.5 metres. However, it steadily increases in depth the further southward it flows, with the deepest areas near St. Louis and New Madrid, Missouri, where the depth is up to 27 metres. The river does get significantly deeper in some places, particularly in the various reservoirs which are made up of the river and other tributaries between Itasca to Minneapolis and in the wetlands near New Orleans. In some areas, these reservoirs can be over 40 metres in depth.

Tributaries

In addition to its own flow, the river is also made up of many tributaries, which all play a role in the Mississippi’s vast system. The most well-known of these tributaries is the Ohio River, which has a total length of 1,579 km, and its own depth varies according to the area. The Ohio joins the Mississippi at Cairo, Illinois, bringing with it all its depth from the Green River and Wabash River.

Flooding

The depth of the Mississippi River is also affected by regular flooding as the river often overflows its banks during periods of heavy rain. The recorded floods of the Mississippi River often exceed depths of more than 25 metres, which can cause serious damage to nearby communities and infrastructure. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 saw the river reach depths of 31.8 metres in some areas, with the Atchafalaya and Red River both reaching 25.3 metres. The flooding of the Mississippi River is an ongoing problem, as is the case with all rivers, and it is important to be aware of its depths when visiting the area.
