Pirates have long been a popular topic with their larger-than-life stories and daring exploits, but the reality is quite different. For many, the thought of pirates on the Mississippi River conjures up images of rafts and rowboats, but are there really any pirates lurking in the world’s fourth longest waterway?

Piracy has gone through various incarnations through the years, but since the days of the classic “Jolly Roger” pirating exploits, piracy has been largely confined to the seas, especially in areas such as the Caribbean and Asia. Although many might find the idea of piracy on the Mississippi River — or any river for that matter — farfetched, the truth is that it has been done.

Throughout the years, there have been many reports of piracy on the Mississippi River. Between 1806 and 1814, there were numerous acts of piracy-related violence and theft reported by ships summoned to the river. In 1817, another incident of river piracy occurred on the Mississippi which prompted several states to form a task force to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators. The task force was successful in its mission, capturing three men and recovering stolen property.

Today, however, it is unlikely that anyone will have to fear running into modern-day piracy on the Mississippi. This is due to the presence of the United States Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies that patrol the river. Additionally, modern communication and security technologies have made it extremely difficult for those with ill intentions to get away with any sort of criminal activity on the waterway.
