Mississippi River’s Height

The majestic Mississippi River is the fourth-longest river in the United States and is well known for its beauty and history. How high is the Mississippi River? The average height of the Mississippi River is estimated to range between 122 to 131 feet depending on the season.

The river was naturally formed thousands of years ago and is continually shaped by nature as well as by human activity. The Mississippi River rises in Minnesota and flows through the heart of North America to Louisiana. Due to its major importance as part of the United States’ infrastructure, it is the most heavily monitored watershed in the country.

Seasonal Impact

The Mississippi River’s height changes based on climactic conditions and varies greatly by season. Because the length of the Mississippi River is so long, it is subject to the effects of a variety of climates along its length. The height is typically greater during the winter and spring as snowmelt adds water to the river and water levels rise. During summer, the water levels are lower due to higher temperatures and more evaporation.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers observe and track the water levels on the Mississippi River and publishes monthly average water level reports, which are based on data collected at 19 sites along the river. The reports provide an insight into the water levels and height of the river, while also informing the public, businesses and tourists of the possible risks associated with a higher or lower flow of the Mississippi.
