The Mississippi River is the world’s fourth longest river and a major waterway for commerce and transportation. It is navigable for much of its length, beginning in Minnesota and ending in Louisiana. So, how far north is the Mississippi River navigable?

The first question to answer is: how long is the Mississippi River?

The Mississippi River flows south 2,320 miles from its source at Lake Itasca in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, according to the United States Geological Survey. As the river winds south, however, the river is hampered by two of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, resulting in a great bend in the river’s course.

The northernmost navigable point of the Mississippi River is about 950 miles north of the Gulf, at Minneapolis, Minnesota. This point marks the beginning of the navigable waterway, as vessels can travel from this point south to the mouth of the river. Unfortunately, due to the commercial and recreational demand for the river, the northernmost point of the Mississippi River is well below the source of the river.
