Egypt is the only place in the world where the Nile crocodile is still found naturally in its habitat. Sadly, its numbers are dwindling due to human-related pressures such as the destruction of its habitat, overfishing, and pollution. “When I was in Lower Egypt I had the chance to observe them close up,” says Mohit Sahoo, a wildlife photographer who joined one of the Wild Cru expeditions. “It was an amazing experience. I could feel the power of these ancient creatures and I could see why the ancient Egyptians revered them.”

As the Nile is a popular tourist destination, some adventurous travelers can book a short Nile crocodile safari that lasts for a few hours, or even a full day. They can be found in several spots along the river and associated lakes, making it possible for tourists to see them in their natural habitat. The safari typically includes having lunch on one of the islands, accompanied by an experienced guide who can point out interesting wildlife and answer questions.
The Egyptian government is also considering setting up some kind of permit system that would allow tourists to observe the Nile crocodiles in their natural habitat. Although it would involve some tight restrictions and safety guidelines to ensure the safety of both animals and tourists, it would be an amazing opportunity to experience these fascinating creatures up close.
